I finished The Great Gatsby! What a wonderful piece of American literature! Can't wait to talk about it! Hurry you up you guys!

Finally started reading the selection

Okay so, first I have to say that while I am not entirely against reading The Great Gatsby in our lovely little book club...I JUST read it in my intro to fiction course. Therefore, I vote we wait a while on that one.

That being said... Here are some of my suggestions:

Bootlegging, Booze, and Lost Loves

The 1920's brought us great Jazz, great Art, and great literary works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, A.A. Milne, Ernest Hemingway and Alexey Tolstoy.  The Jazz Age also brilliantly ushered in the era of prohibition.  Organized Crime and Bootlegging flourished under the prohibition Amendment, creating a new breed of Millionaire.  So sets the stage for The Great Gatsby.

Our story centers on Gatsby, our lavish and eccentric Anti-Hero as he throws debauch party after party in the hopes of wooing the women across the bay.  Nick Carraway, one of my favorite narrators, watches as the "party" spirals out of control.  I'm sure most, if not all of us, have already read The Great Gatsby, but this quick read will be the perfect way to kick off our summer book club.  Plus, the great Leonardo DiCaprio is headlining a new film adaptation in December that is sure to put a great modern spin on the classic tale.

So, let's all dive into one of the most romanticized eras of all time and enjoy the timeless classic that is The Great Gatsby.  Cheers "old sport[s]!"

Introduction

Hello!

So we decided today that it might be fun to start a book club as a family. Therefore, I've built this blog for us to use as a forum for discussion. We can all post text (or video for the ambitious types) discussing our understanding of the books, our likes and dislikes, the merits, etc.

To start, we should throw out some suggestions for the initial book and the books to follow.

I think it would be great for everyone to read The Road, which I think is a glorious novel. Others could be The Death of Jim Loney, Black Elk Speaks, or The Thing Around Your Neck (I'm pretty sure this is the title of this one).

Anyway, welcome! I hope everybody is on board. Let's get our reading on!
